Genesis Drops Track-Focused Version of G70 Sedan

It was less than two weeks ago that we reported on this plucky little car site that Genesis was preparing to leap into Le Mans with an all-new car – the GMR-001 – from an all-new racing effort, Genesis Magma Racing.

Much was said at that reveal event but a  lot of it was a variation on a theme: “when we say we’re going to do something, we do it”. Indeed, with an experienced team boss and drivers they do, indeed, seem prepared to walk the walk – or was that “race the race”? Whatever it is, Genesis isn’t resting on those laurels – in fact, they’re going back to the track. Or, more precisely, they’re looking to have Genesis drivers go back to the track with what you see here, the G70 Track Day Special Concept — not really one for great names, these guys;

Porsche driver: “I’m taking my GT3 RS to meet up with my buddy. He just got some new Track Day Special.”

Porsche driver’s friend: “Cool! What’s it called? M3 CS? Z06?”

Porsche driver: “Track Day Special. It’s called ‘Track Day Special’.”

Porsche driver’s friend: “…”

Nomenclature issues aside, the Track Day Concept – which is based on the popular G70 luxury compact sedan — comes by its existence honestly. People may not realize this, but Genesis has the honour of running what’s called a “Track Taxi” at the Nurburgring raceway in Germany. These “taxis” aren’t there to get you from A to B; their fares include full-chat laps of the famous 21-ish kilometre track, giving folks a taste of what it’s like to race on the “Green Hell”. Other members of this particular taxi fleet include, among others, the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro, The BMW M5 and, yes, the 911 GT3 RS. It’s some pretty heady company.

To bring the G70 Track Day Special up to snuff, the KW suspension gets lowered and stiffened, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires wrapped around lightweight OZ Estrema wheels do the dirty work and it’s all powered by a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 good for 365 horsepower.

Those specs and bits are all shared with the Ring Taxi version; the Track Day Special gets even wilder with a black-and-orange livery, front and rear tow cables, hood vents and massive trunk spoiler.

For right now, the Track Day Special Concept is just that – a concept – but if you look at what Genesis has been up to lately, we’re going to allow ourselves to believe they’ll actually build it.

Oh, and if these pics aren’t enough, have no fear; Canadians will get a chance to see the Track Day Special in the metal, as it were, as it embarks on a cross-Canada tour to the various Canadian Genesis stores.
