Road Test: 2025 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

With all due respect to the Ford Mustang Mach-E, nothing really beats the original.

With the weather turning colder, it may have seemed odd to some that I was testing a convertible. But Mother Nature decided to shine down on me with some unseasonably warm weather, and I was able to enjoy a week with the 2025 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Premium. The powerful engine, manual transmission and well-equipped cabin made for an enjoyable week in a vehicle that continues to deliver pure driving enjoyment.

With a starting price of $64,080, our tester included a host of extras that pushed the final cost to $84,475.

The biggest extra was the GT Performance Package, which adds $6,800 for Brembo brakes with black calipers, as well as a 3.73 Torsen rear axle. Other extras include a Bang & Olufsen sound system ($1,295), MagneRide damping system ($2,500), Active Valve Exhaust ($1,545), California Special Package ($2,710) and Equipment Group 401A ($3,000).

Powertrain: The rear-wheel-drive Mustang GT has one heck of an engine under its long hood.

A 5.0-litre V8 roars to life when you push the ignition button, with a bone-shaking note that is music to the ears of anyone who appreciates the power of a V8.

It delivers plenty of punch; 486 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque, sent through a six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching.

Fuel-economy estimates from Ford average 13.7 L/100 km, which I was unable to match. My result was 16.0 L/100 km, with a higher percentage of city driving versus highway cruising, which likely accounts for the difference.

Exterior: Our Mustang GT tester was painted Shadow Black and featured blue accent trims in the front fascia, badges and wheels, giving the car a distinctive touch of personality.

The styling of the current-generation Mustang is one I truly enjoy. From the elongated front end, with its sculpted hood and air vents, to the clean body lines, there is not a bad angle from which to view this car. At the rear, the iconic triple-bar lighting for the turn signals and brake lights remains instantly recognizable, while quad exhaust tips cap off the look. And did I mention the sound coming from those exhausts is spectacular?

Interior: The two-door Mustang GT Convertible does present some challenges inside, notably space for second-row passengers.

The four-seater can be tight back there, and headroom becomes a challenge—at least with the roof raised.

From the driver’s seat, however, you are positioned perfectly to make the most of the Mustang GT. The shifter is well located, and the layout allows your hand to rest at a natural angle.

Features include heated and cooled front seats; a great bonus on hot days with the roof down, plus a heated steering wheel, leather seating surfaces and ambient lighting that can be adjusted to suit your mood.

The trunk is, well, quite small. If you have kids who play hockey, you may need to consider a different vehicle to haul that gear to and from the arena.

Infotainment: The Mustang GT features the latest iteration of Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, accessed through a 13.2-inch touchscreen. It’s a user-friendly setup with intuitive menus and quick-response commands.

It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as satellite radio.

Drive: The strong acceleration from the throaty V8, combined with a smooth-shifting manual gearbox, makes the Mustang GT Convertible a well-balanced sports car. On the highway, it cruises effortlessly, while even in city driving and traffic the manual transmission was genuinely enjoyable.

The optional MagneRide adaptive suspension stiffens the ride overall, but not to the point of being uncomfortable.

The upgraded brakes feel firm and provide excellent stopping power, while the steering responsiveness was solid in my opinion.

Conclusion: The Mustang name remains synonymous with power and performance. The GT Convertible is no slouch in either department and delivered a thoroughly enjoyable week behind the wheel.

And I was grateful Mother Nature decided to grace me with some sunny days to enjoy top-down driving in the convertible.
