When I first laid eyes on the redesigned Hyundai Kona when it arrived for the 2024 model year, it represented a major step forward for the compact crossover.

Gone was the somewhat bland styling, replaced by a futuristic design that finally helped it stand out in a crowded segment.
Some have likened the design of the front end to the helmets seen in Star Wars—and as a fan of the franchise, it’s easy to see the comparison. I’m here for it.
The Kona is offered in three trims, with a base price under $30,000. We tested the top-tier Kona N Line, which adds a more powerful engine, all-wheel drive, and a price point of $42,344.50.
Our tester also included the optional Ultimate Package ($3,250), which upgrades the infotainment system and adds enhanced driving aids such as Highway Driving Assist, Remote Smart Parking Assist, Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist, ventilated front seats and more.

Powertrain: Instead of the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine found in the lower trims, the N Line receives a more powerful 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. These are solid numbers for a compact crossover and are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Hyundai rates the N Line at 9.0 L/100 km, but I averaged 9.9 L/100 km during my week with the vehicle.
Exterior: Redesigned for 2024, the second-generation Kona carries forward unchanged for 2026. The overall look remains modern, bold and distinctly futuristic. The N Line adds several unique touches that heighten its visual appeal, including:
- Unique front bumper fascia and grille with black accents
- 19-inch alloy wheels
- Chrome-tipped dual exhaust outlets
- Rear spoiler
- Body-coloured wheel surrounds
- Full-width LED daytime running light bar

Our tester featured a sharp two-tone colour scheme—Ultimate Red with a contrasting black roof—for an additional $700.
Interior: Inside, the Kona N Line receives several upgrades that elevate the cabin experience.
Comfortable leather and suede sport seats with contrast stitching feel surprisingly upscale for the segment. Aluminum pedals and a leather-wrapped N Line steering wheel further enhance the sporty atmosphere.
A pair of 12.3-inch screens—one for the digital gauges and one for the infotainment system—headline the dash. A red accent line runs its full width, making the cabin feel wider and more spacious.

Physical controls for HVAC and audio remain conveniently placed beneath the infotainment screen, while seat and drive-mode controls sit near the selector in the centre console.
Rear passengers enjoy respectable head- and legroom, and the cargo area is adequate for everyday duty. Cabin noise is well managed, creating a pleasant environment on longer drives.
Infotainment: The Ultimate Package equips the Kona N Line with:
- Built-in navigation
- Bose premium audio with eight speakers
- Wireless device charging
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Satellite radio

The system is easy to use and responsive, and the Bose upgrade provides excellent clarity.
Drive: Drivers can choose from Eco, Normal, and Sport modes via the centre console button. I spent most of my week in Normal mode and found the overall drive to be pleasant and composed.
Power delivery is smooth and plentiful for city and highway driving. Steering feel is responsive and makes the Kona N Line easy to manoeuvre and park. The suspension effectively isolates occupants from rough pavement, contributing to a comfortable, confident ride.
The AWD system runs primarily in front-wheel-drive mode for fuel efficiency, but can send power rearward instantly when slip is detected.
Conclusion: A sharp redesign, lively turbo powertrain and a well-appointed interior helped make my week with the 2026 Hyundai Kona N Line AWD highly enjoyable. It offers surprising performance, strong value and versatile space for passengers and cargo.
And for those who love the Kona’s design but want to skip gas stations altogether, Hyundai also offers it as a fully electric model.
