2023 GMC Canyon Debuts

The third-generation GMC Canyon is upon us, and with it comes the first ever AT4X designed for a good time off the beaten path.

“GMC is flexing the might of our off-road muscle,” says GMC Canada brand director, James Hodge, in a media release. “Canyon AT4X benefits from key learnings gained from our AT4 strategy to bring customers the most advanced off-road midsize truck.”

Drawing inspiration from last year’s AT4 concept, the vehicle is quite clearly equipped for the task with features including a three-inch factory lift offering 10.7-inches of ground clearance, Multimatic DSSV shocks, front and rear electronic locking differentials and 33-inch mud terrain tires.

The ultra-wide chassis doesn’t just look cool, but, aided by the removal of the outgoing model’s front air dam, improves approach, departure and breakover angles. The front axle has also been moved forward giving the pickup a shorter, more aggressive snout and a planted stance. Full LED headlights and foglamps ensure nighttime visibility is never an issue, and an available sunroof is a first for the mid-size segment.  A crew cab and short 5-foot-2 bed configuration is standard across the lineup.

Peek at the underside and a heavy-duty front skid plate, transfer case shield and rocker protectors will reveal themselves, offering much-needed protection while tackling unfriendly environments. A water-tight tailgate storage system is being introduced as well for increased flexibility.

GMC is looking to elevate the level of luxury on this truck via laser-etched wood trim and leather upholstery and an AT4X-exclusive colour palette consisting of a Ceramic White and Obsidian Rush palette. In addition, there’s an 11-inch digital instrument cluster, 6.3-inch head-up display, seven-speaker Bose stereo and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Only one engine powers all Canyons: a turbocharged 2.7-litre four-cylinder producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Five selectable drive modes change the behaviour of the vehicle: Baja (high-speed off-roading), Terrain (precision rock-crawling), Off-road (general off-road dynamics), Normal (everyday motoring) and Tow/haul (trailering heavy loads).

Early adopters can choose an ultra-limited special Edition 1 package bundling front-and-rear-facing underbody cameras with wash function, safari-bar-equipped front bumper, 30-inch grille light bar, COMEUP USA winch, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, re-configurable bed rail system, performance front skid plate and unique tailgate badging.

Production of the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X is expected to begin in spring 2023.
