A plan by the Quebec government to offer cash rebates for residents who purchase used electric vehicles is drawing praise.
In the provincial budget announced March 28, the Quebec government said it will begin offering up to $4,000 to consumers who buy pre-owned electric cars that were not previously registered in Quebec.
That certainly made Nissan Canada, which sells the LEAF electric vehicle, happy.
“We are thrilled with the government of Quebec’s changes to its Drive Electric Program. This solidifies the province as a leader in the field of electric mobility – by extending the accessibility and practicality of electric vehicles,” Joni Paiva, president of Nissan Canada, said in a statement. “We know that Nissan LEAF owners love the benefits of driving electric – zero spending on gas, low maintenance, quick acceleration and the feeling of driving an environmentally friendly vehicle. These ownership benefits will be experienced by even more customers thanks to the pilot project for used electric vehicles – ultimately helping move electric vehicles toward becoming the preferred source of mobility in Quebec.”
The program starts April 1, and also extends the $8,000 credit for new electric vehicles. Those who buy a pre-owned EV will also benefit from government support for the buying a home charging station.
Nissan said it would be announcing a plan in the coming weeks to support the purchase of pre-owned EVs
The offer for pre-owned EVs applies only to the first 1,000 consumers who apply for the credit.
Here are the criteria:
The vehicle is between three and four years old
– Comes from outside Quebec
– Was bought or leased from an authorized dealer
– Comes with a warranty of at least three years or 40,000 km, and has been inspected and certified by an automobile manufacturer
