From Road to Wrist: Porsche’s Ultimate Timepiece Configurator

Just as the Porsche Car Configurator (PCC) allows buyers to dial in the exact spec they want for their vehicle — and view it in real time from different perspectives — the newly revamped Porsche Design Timepieces Configurator (PDTC) delivers a near-identical experience for the so-called “sports car on your wrist.”

Utilizing Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3D creation tool — which powers everything from smash-hit video games like Fortnite to film and television production — the new configurator is the result of a partnership between two subsidiaries: Porsche Lifestyle Group and MHP (a management and IT consultancy). The result is an intuitive and lightning-fast customization system, leaving no mystery as to what the finished piece will look like.

Want to match the colours with a bespoke 911 build made on the aforementioned PCC? No problem — a single click transfers saved designs between the two platforms. For example, the ring around the dial can be matched to any of the vehicle’s 142 available paint colours, and the strap is crafted from the same leather and yarn found in the interior.

Built in the Porsche Design manufacturing facility in Solothurn, Switzerland, either the Chronograph (reference WERK 01.100) or the Globetimer (ref. WERK 04.110) make ideal candidates for the PDTC program. The winding rotor of both calibres is visible through the caseback and may appear familiar, as it’s optionally modelled after the shape of various 911 wheels. To further personalize the watch, wearers can engrave a short message of up to 12 characters — popular choices include a name, license plate number, or vehicle VIN.

Beneath the anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the dial and subdials are modelled after the instrument cluster and rev counter, featuring white numerals and markers on a matte black background. The Chronograph includes a date display at four o’clock and a 48-hour power reserve, while the Globetimer adds an extra hand, inner date dial, and a UTC function with 38 hours of stored energy. A 42-millimetre titanium case, bezel, and pushers keep things lightweight and durable, and both models boast a water resistance rating of 5 bar, or 50 metres.

Porsche Design was established in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who also helped create the first 911 nine years earlier. In 2017, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Porsche AG. Prices start at $6,250 USD. Visit the configuration website to learn more.
