Hyundai has delivered some solid designs in recent years, backed up by vehicles that are usually quite good to drive. A recent test of the 2026 Sonata Hybrid — which is making a return to the Canadian market — proved that sedans are still very solid options for family transportation.

I was also reasonably impressed with a price point under $40,000 for a stylish, efficient, and pleasant-to-drive hybrid. The Preferred Trend Hybrid trim sits in the middle of the three trims offered on the Sonata lineup, though opting for this version does mean sacrificing all-wheel drive functionality.
Powertrain: Under the hood is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a hybrid system, producing 192 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque — more than adequate for a midsize sedan. Power delivery is smooth, as is acceleration. I found the transition between gas and electric power to be nearly imperceptible, and the six-speed automatic transmission handled everything with ease.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to match the estimated combined fuel economy rating of 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres, with my observed result coming in at 6.1 L/100 km.
Exterior: In terms of styling, Hyundai has another success on its hands with the Sonata Hybrid. After a dinner with friends during my time with the sedan, two of them remarked on how elegant the Sonata looked — and it’s hard to disagree.
The sweeping lines create a pleasing silhouette, while the sleek front end is modern and clean, featuring LED headlights and daytime running lights in a very minimalistic design. The look is further enhanced by an attractive set of 17-inch alloy wheels, and the Sonata Hybrid also comes equipped with a large panoramic sunroof. For my money, it’s one of the best-looking sedans on the market.

Interior: Equally modern — and inviting — is the cabin of the Sonata Hybrid. There is a dearth of physical buttons, replaced mostly by tactile controls and on-screen menus. Occupants are surrounded by premium-feeling materials, including leather seats that are heated and ventilated up front.
You also get a heated steering wheel and dual-zone automatic climate control for added comfort. The all-digital gauge cluster is another modern touch found across many Hyundai models, and one I truly appreciate. The expansive glass roof bathes the cabin in natural light.

Rear legroom is generous, and the trunk handled hockey bags and grocery runs with no issues.
Infotainment: The Sonata Hybrid follows a familiar Hyundai pattern when it comes to infotainment. A large 12.3-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard and serves as the system’s focal point, offering a clean layout and an easy-to-use interface.
The system includes satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the Bluelink Connected Vehicle System. One notable omission, however, is wireless device charging, which feels like a missed opportunity given the wireless phone integration.
Drive: I really enjoyed my time behind the wheel of the Sonata Hybrid. The suspension delivers a composed and comfortable ride, while the cabin remains whisper-quiet thanks to Hyundai’s soundproofing efforts.
There’s very little to dislike about the Sonata’s on-road presence. It also comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, including lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and more.
Conclusion: After a few years away from the Canadian market, the return of the Sonata Hybrid is a welcome one. Modern, well designed, and more affordable than expected, it’s a sedan that would absolutely make my short list for a new-vehicle purchase.
