The Prelude is back. After more than two decades away, Honda’s beloved sports coupe has returned, this time reimagined for a new generation of drivers with hybrid-electric power and a renewed commitment to the “joy of driving.” Making its North American debut this fall, the 2026 Honda Prelude blends the nostalgia of its nameplate with the technology, efficiency and precision expected of modern Honda performance.

The Spirit of the Original, Reborn
Few names stir as much emotion among Honda enthusiasts as the Prelude. From the late 1970s through the early 2000s, the sleek coupe embodied Honda’s reputation for accessible performance and everyday usability. Now, the new Prelude takes that same philosophy and electrifies it, literally.
“The return of the iconic Prelude demonstrates Honda’s passion for the ‘joy of driving’ while engineering a modern, hybrid vehicle that solidifies our commitment to an electrified future,” said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President, Honda Canada.
Arriving in Canadian dealerships late this year, the Prelude will serve as a bridge between Honda’s past and future: the first model to pair the company’s two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain with the high-performance chassis of the Civic Type R.

Hybrid Power Meets Type R Precision
Under the sleekly sculpted hood sits Honda’s award-winning two-motor hybrid-electric system, also found in the Civic Hybrid. A 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle engine teams up with a pair of electric motors to produce a combined 200 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. It’s a smooth yet energetic powertrain that offers both responsive acceleration and exceptional efficiency.
In a first for Honda, the Prelude’s hybrid system works in harmony with key Civic Type R components, including the dual-axis strut front suspension, adaptive dampers and Brembo four-piston front brakes. The result is a car tuned not just for performance, but for an engaging “grand touring” feel, a coupe that’s as comfortable crossing provinces as it is carving corners.

Adding a unique twist to the experience is Honda’s new S+ Shift mode, debuting here. It simulates a traditional performance transmission with virtual rev-matched downshifts, engine sound enhancement and rapid paddle responses, bringing a more visceral connection between car and driver.
Sculpted for Style and Speed
Designed in Japan, the Prelude’s bodywork communicates both sophistication and athleticism. Its long, low profile and wide stance recall the graceful proportions of earlier generations while embracing modern aerodynamic efficiency. Subtle details; flush door handles, laser-brazed roof seams, a “double-bubble” roofline, hint at precision craftsmanship.
The coupe rides on 19-inch Berlina Black wheels wrapped in 235/40R19 performance rubber. Behind them sit bright blue Brembo calipers, a visual signature exclusive to the Prelude. Three launch colours will be offered: Rally Red, Crystal Black Pearl, and a new Winter Frost Pearl that adds an icy shimmer to its sculpted panels.

Inside the Modern Grand Tourer
Inside, the Prelude’s cabin is pure driver focus. Low cowl lines and thin A-pillars enhance visibility, while the seating position and asymmetrical bolstering balance sport and comfort. Leather-trimmed sport seats with perforated houndstooth inserts, blue accent stitching and embossed Prelude logos strike a perfect blend of nostalgia and luxury.
The two-tone Blue and White interior option exudes retro charm, while a full Black layout provides a more restrained aesthetic. A thick-rimmed flat-bottom steering wheel, alloy pedals and paddle shifters add performance cues. Meanwhile, 2+2 seating and a folding rear bench make the coupe surprisingly practical, with room for golf bags or weekend luggage beneath the liftback hatch.
Technology That Complements the Drive
Honda has built the Prelude’s tech suite around intuitive usability. A 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch HD touchscreen with Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™, and a wireless phone charger all come standard. The infotainment system integrates seamlessly with Google Assistant and Google Maps, ensuring connectivity without distraction.
Audio is handled by an eight-speaker Bose Centerpoint system, engineered specifically for the Prelude’s cabin to deliver a balanced, immersive soundstage. Every drive mode; Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual, adjusts steering, throttle response, damping, and even engine sound to suit driver mood and road conditions.

Safety and Electrified Ambition
As with all modern Hondas, safety remains a cornerstone. The Prelude comes equipped with the full Honda Sensing suite, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition and post-collision braking. The Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure and new-generation airbags further reinforce Honda’s “Safety for Everyone” philosophy.
Honda’s electrification strategy continues to accelerate in Canada, with hybrid-electric models now accounting for nearly 40 per cent of sales. By the time the Prelude hits showrooms, it will join the CR-V, Accord and Civic Hybrids in a growing lineup that represents the brand’s vision for performance without compromise.

Return of an Icon
The 2026 Honda Prelude’s revival isn’t just about bringing back a name—it’s about rekindling an attitude. With its fusion of hybrid power, Type R chassis engineering, and everyday usability, the Prelude once again embodies Honda’s DNA: precise, reliable, and genuinely fun to drive.
Canadians who remember the original coupe will find plenty of nostalgia in its return, but for younger drivers, the new Prelude will likely define their first taste of attainable performance. After all, that was always the point.
