Road Test: 2026 GMC Terrain Denali AWD

The GMC Terrain was completely redesigned for the 2025 model year, and there are no significant changes for the 2026 Terrain Denali AWD version I recently tested.

Facing stiff competition in the crowded crossover segment, the Terrain’s new look — at least to my eye — feels a bit behind the rest. The boxier design seems slightly out of place among sleeker competitors.

That said, the Denali trim is well equipped and delivers a pleasant ride, albeit at a relatively high price point of more than $51,000 (with the only option on our tester being $495 for Downpour Metallic paint).

Powertrain: The all-wheel drive Terrain Denali is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Under acceleration, the Terrain Denali felt somewhat sluggish off the line, and there was a subtle vibration in the cabin during initial throttle input, resulting in a less-than-smooth launch. Once up to speed, however, the vehicle settled in and delivered an overall composed and comfortable driving experience.

When properly equipped, the Terrain can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Fuel efficiency proved respectable, as I returned an average of 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres, not far off GMC’s combined rating of 9.5 L/100 km.

Exterior: Design-wise, the Terrain leans heavily into a boxy aesthetic. Compared to others in the segment, including the Chevrolet Equinox from within the GM family, it feels bulkier and less streamlined.

There are, however, several attractive elements, including 19-inch Midnight Silver aluminum wheels and LED headlights flanking a large chrome grille that anchors the squared-off front end.

Interior: As expected from the Denali trim, the interior is well appointed. The After Dark (black) leather-appointed seating and quality cabin materials create an upscale feel.

The front seats are both heated and ventilated, while the rear outboard seats are heated, a welcome feature during Canadian winters.

Like many GM products, the Terrain Denali includes a rear camera mirror. While innovative, it remains a feature I haven’t fully warmed to, and I found myself reverting to the traditional mirror.

Several long highway drives to a hockey tournament demonstrated that the Terrain is comfortable for extended trips. The seats are supportive, and road noise is reasonably well contained.

Cargo space is generous, and the 60/40 split-folding rear seats add versatility when additional capacity is required.

Infotainment: Dominating the cabin is a 15-inch tablet-style infotainment screen featuring Google built-in, now common across many GM models.

The system includes satellite radio, Wi-Fi connectivity, navigation, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The large display presents clear menus, and overall usability is intuitive.

While many functions are screen-based, GMC wisely retained some physical toggle switches for frequently used controls such as temperature and fan speed,  a practical touch that enhances day-to-day usability.

Drive: Aside from the initial hesitation under acceleration, the Terrain Denali delivers a composed driving experience. The AWD system handled snow-covered roads confidently, inspiring assurance during long highway drives in less-than-ideal conditions.

The drive mode selector offers Normal, AWD, Snow, and Off-Road settings, allowing drivers to tailor performance to changing conditions.

Overall, the Terrain provides competent road manners, responsive handling, and light steering effort.

Conclusion: The Terrain Denali delivers where you would expect a Denali to deliver comfort, equipment and an upscale cabin that makes long drives easy. It’s practical, spacious and capable in winter conditions, all important qualities for Canadian buyers.

However, in a segment filled with stylish, efficient and often less expensive alternatives, the Terrain’s conservative exterior design and modest powertrain may not be enough to justify a price tag north of $50,000. It’s a solid entry, but at this level, “solid” may not be enough.
